The Centre for Musculoskeletal Studies is pleased to offer the Graduate Diploma in Neurological Rehabilitation. The course is offered to qualified physiotherapists who wish to enhance their clinical skills and related neurosciences knowledge in the area of Neurological Rehabilitation.

In keeping with recent trends in postgraduate professional education, the Graduate Diploma in Neurological Rehabilitation provides the opportunity for an intensive clinical residency in Perth, with related biomedical units available in external study mode. The course content recognises the inter-disciplinary nature of the clinical specialties in neurological physiotherapy and will provide graduate physiotherapists with tuition in assessment and treatment skills which have relevance to contemporary clinical practice.

Pre-requisites: Candidates must hold a recognised bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy, or satisfy the Faculty that their level of physiotherapy education and the duration and level of their professional experience are such that they have the potential to complete the course satisfactorily. A minimum of two years clinical experience in the areas of neurology/neurosurgery/gerontology is recommended prior to enrolment in this course. Course participants may be eligible for tax deductions on course fees.

You may download guidelines and application forms from the Clinical Program section of this web site.

Faculty Handbook Entry for Graduate Diploma of Neurological Rehabilitation

The clinical component of the course will be conducted as an intensive 4 week practicuum (120hrs) which will include teaching, laboratory and practical sessions [2 units].

Patient demonstrations, clinic visits and clinical case studies will be used to facilitate transfer of new knowledge and techniques to the clinical setting. The innovative structure of these units will integrate aspects of neuroanatomy, pathology and neurophysiology which directly influence the practice of neurological physiotherapy. The neuroscience units will be offered by distance learning mode.

A feature of this program will be the use of a variety of teaching venues including the School of Anatomy & Human Biology, UWA, Departments of Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology, and Neuroimaging, Royal Perth Hospital, the Neuromuscular Clinic, QEII, and the Park Ave clinical teaching site, on the Crawley campus.

Unit Content

PTMT8501 Clinical Reasoning in Neurological Rehabilitation

This unit forms part of the Graduate Diploma of Neurological Physiotherapy which aims to provide participants with an opportunity to update theoretical knowledge and skills in the physiotherapy rehabilitation of adults with acquired central and peripheral neurological disorders. The main focus of the unit will be developing clinical reasoning and evaluation procedures. This will include revision of physiology and anatomy of musculoskeletal and neurological systems, and in-depth review of clinical reasoning theory, assessment procedures for acquired central or peripheral nervous system disorders and interpretation of clinical findings. Issues related to measuring impairment, disability (activity) and handicap (participation) in neurologically impaired clients will also be reviewed. The role of related diagnostic methodology for this client group such as real-time ultrasound, neuroimaging (fMRI, PET, CT), and electrophysiological testing (EMG, EEG) will be presented.

PTMT8502 Applied Neurological Rehabilitation

This unit forms part of the Graduate Diploma of Neurological Physiotherapy which aims to provide participants with an opportunity to update theoretical knowledge and skills in the physiotherapy rehabilitation of adults with acquired central and peripheral neurological disorders. The main focus of the unit will be 'hands-on' skills training related to the management of adult onset neurological impairment. Specific areas addressed will include management of: hypertonia, balance and vestibular dysfunction, movement disorders, perceptual dysfunction, oro-facial dysfunction, neuromuscular disorders, impaired motor control and muscle function, and age related issues. In addition, management of issues such as deconditioning associated with immobility, musculoskeletal sequelae of neurological disorders, specific nutritional needs, wheelchair and seating prescription, pain syndromes, neuropsychological issues and models of physiotherapy service provision will be discussed.

Opportunities will be provided for clinical visits and discussion with a wide range of neurological rehabilitation specialists from related medical and allied health disciplines.

Clinical demonstration and case studies will be used in addition to supervised skills training to facilitate transfer of new knowledge and techniques to the clinical setting.

External Study Units

PTMT8503 Clinical Science

Secondary consequences of adult onset acquired neurological dysfunction

This unit forms part of the Graduate Diploma in Neurological Physiotherapy which aims to provide participants with an opportunity to update theoretical knowledge and skills in the physiotherapy rehabilitation of adults with acquired central and peripheral neurological disorders. The main focus of this unit is to provide a structured review of literature related to the effect of acquired nervous system disorders on other body systems. Assessment and treatment of sequelae such as cardiovascular deconditioning, altered metabolic responses, disuse induced changes in the musculoskeletal system and adaptive behaviours will be addressed, in addition to examining the interaction between neural and musculoskeletal adaptations in neurologically impaired adults.

PTMT8504 Clinical Science

Neural plasticity - review and implications for clinical practice

This unit forms part of the Graduate Diploma in Neurological Physiotherapy which aims to provide participants with an opportunity to update theoretical knowledge and skills in the physiotherapy rehabilitation of adults with acquired central and peripheral neurological disorders. The main focus of this unit is to provide a structured review of contemporary neuroscience literature related to motor control and skill acquisition theory and evidence for neural plasticity after acquired nervous system damage. Evidence for neural plasticity associated with specific training paradigms such as 'forced use' of the hemiparetic upper limb and current research related to spinal cord, cortical and peripheral neural regeneration will be reviewed.
